Bone Up On Second Grade Math
During second grade, students should add a good deal to the knowledge of mathematics they acquired in first grade. By the end of the year, they should have memorized all the basic addition and subtraction facts, and have learned how to add and subtract three-digit numbers. They should also have begun to memorize the multiplication tables, and have had practice on such important topics as word problems, geometry, fractions, time and money.

In first grade you learned to count by tens and by fives. Counting by tens or fives is called skip-counting, because you skip over numbers when you count this way. You should also learn to skip-count by twos and threes. To count by twos, count the second number each time, like this:
So to count by twos, you count 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and so on. To count by threes, count the third number each time, like this:
When you count by twos beginning with 0, you are naming the even numbers. The even numbers up to 30 are:
When you count by twos beginning with 1, you are naming the odd numbers. The odd numbers up to 30 are:

Adding a number to itself is called doubling the number. When you add 2 and 2 you double 2. 2+2=4, so double 2 is 4. Another way to say this is that twice 2 is 4.

Remember there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. 60 is the amount of time it takes for the minuet hand to go all the way around the clock. It is also the amount of time it takes for the hour hand to move from one number to the next number.
