Bone Up On Second Grade Math

During second grade, students should add a good deal to the knowledge of mathematics they acquired in first grade. By the end of the year, they should have memorized all the basic addition and subtraction facts, and have learned how to add and subtract three-digit numbers. They should also have begun to memorize the multiplication tables, and have had practice on such important topics as word problems, geometry, fractions, time and money.

 Learning this material requires consistent effort and practice, but it is definitely within the reach of all students.

Skip-Counting, Counting by Twos and Threes

In first grade you learned to count by tens and by fives. Counting by tens or fives is called skip-counting, because you skip over numbers when you count this way. You should also learn to skip-count by twos and threes. To count by twos, count the second number each time, like this:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

So to count by twos, you count 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and so on. To count by threes, count the third number each time, like this:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

Even and Odd Numbers

When you count by twos beginning with 0, you are naming the even numbers. The even numbers up to 30 are:

0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30

When you count by twos beginning with 1, you are naming the odd numbers. The odd numbers up to 30 are:

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29

 

Addition and Subtraction Facts to 18

In first grade you learned all the addition facts with sums up to 12. Here are all the other addition facts. Learn these new facts by heart, so that you can give the sums quickly without stopping to count. You need to practice these new facts especially hard.

Subtraction facts from 13-18

In first grade you learned all the subtraction facts from numbers up to 12. Here are all the other subtraction facts. When you have learned all the subtraction facts, you will be able to solve any subtraction problem quickly and easily.

Doubling Numbers

Adding a number to itself is called doubling the number. When you add 2 and 2 you double 2. 2+2=4, so double 2 is 4. Another way to say this is that twice 2 is 4.

Learn all the doubles for the numbers 1 through 9.

1+1=2

4+4=8

7+7=14

2+2=4

5+5=10

8+8=16

3+3=6

6+6=12

9+9=18

Time

Remember there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. 60 is the amount of time it takes for the minuet hand to go all the way around the clock. It is also the amount of time it takes for the hour hand to move from one number to the next number.

 Learn this poem and say it when you are telling time and you will get it right every time.

Money

Your already know the value of the coins called penny, nickel, dime, and quarter. You already know different ways to make money add up to 25cents. Learn different ways to make up 1 dollar. 

4 quarters make $1.00

2 half dollars make $1.00

10 dimes make $1.00

Also learn that 2 quarters make 50 cents, and 3 quarters make 75cents.
